Avonmouth to get four more wind turbine as work begins

The area already has three privately-owned wind turbinesWork to install four more wind turbines at a sewage treatment works in Bristol is under way.

Bristol-based Triodos Renewables said the 413ft (126m)-tall turbines close to Avonmouth docks, would produce enough energy to power 4,800 homes.

They are being built as part of Wessex Water'sAvonmouth Wind Power Project.

The Bristol Port Company is already operating three turbines, owned by Ecotricity, on the land at Bristol Sewage Treatment Works.

'Piece by piece'

The coastal setting at Avonmouth has good wind exposure and easy links with the National Grid.

"This is the culmination of about two years work for us and about six years on the project, so it's really great to see the project coming together," said Matthew Clayton, the managing director of Triodos Renewables.

"The kit was delivered into Avonmouth port just 10 days ago from Germany.

"Each turbine is effectively seven units, and that's all brought to site piece by piece while we're doing the construction."

Mr Clayton said construction can take as little as 24 hours but they had allowed themselves three to four weeks to get all four turbines up at the site.

Wessex Water said each turbine would be capable of generating up to three megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The company said they should last about 30 years, after which they will be decommissioned or replaced.
