Farmer considering new application for wind turbine at Lamorna after withdrawing previous plans

A FARMER is considering a new application for a wind turbine at Lamorna after withdrawing previous plans due to a public outcry.

Simon Whear filed with Cornwall Council a submission to erect two 112ft structures in October this year, but after many in Lamorna and St Buryan opposed them, citing the area’s natural beauty and historical significance as to why, the landowner decided to pull out.

Mr Whear said following the local council’s objection discussions with a representative of the unitary authority concluded with advice to rethink plans. But now he is again in discussions with Capture Energy, which specialises in turbines, to apply again next year - though for only one.

“She [Cornwall Council representative] recommended a refusal because of the amount of opposition,” said Mr Whear, who lives in St Erth.

“But we’re [with Capture Energy] looking into doing one - we’ve had a look into the costs. We want to meet residents half-way.

“It would be less intrusive and no houses would be able to hear it.”

The farmer, who feels renewable energy is very much the “future” said a photo mock-up of what the mini wind turbine would look like, commissioned by resident Jan Cutler, was simply “wrong”.

“The photo was completely inaccurate,” he said. "We’ve had professional surveys done.”

He added he may file a restructured application early next year, but noted potentially different financial implications - he said the government may be cut down on green subsidies by 20 per cent in 2014.

Mr Whear said he has never denied he would make money from plans, but mentioned he would be open to donate around five per cent of money made to the local area, with the view to help fund St Buryan’s public toilets.

“I would be willing to put back into the community,” he said.

Nicola Davies, of Capture Energy, said: “We’re working on what the options are. We’re not ruling it [a new submission] out.”
